New reflections on the Civilizing Process based on an expansion of the concept of sublimation in Jean Laplanche

This essay offers a metapsychological reading of Jean Laplanche's work, articulating his General Theory of Seduction with the hypothesis of a "civilizational component" within the life sexual drive. Challenging Freud's emphasis on repression as the foundation of civilization, the author argues that translational activity — especially in its sublimatory form — not only constitutes the psychic subject but also enables solidaristic bonds, care for the other, and symbolic cultural inscription. Primary sublimation, conceived here as the process of creating meaning in response to the sexual enigma of the other, establishes an ethical movement of translation, grounding a mode of listening that sustains alterity as irreducible. Within this framework, the civilizing process is viewed as a shared historical effort of collective translation, while anti-civilizational forces arise from failures in translation and from obstructions posed by the myth-symbolic pseudo-unconscious. Psychoanalytic listening is thus reframed as an ethical space, not aimed at cure, but at maintaining the enigma and fostering silent solidarity. Translating, listening, and caring emerge not as moral imperatives, but as sublimatory effects of psychic work and as conditions for a human becoming grounded in the otherness within and beyond the self.
