Embora a psicanálise norte americana seja vista como dominada monoliticamente pela psicologia do ego, isto não é totalmente correto. Ao longo dos anos houve muitas revisões das teorias psicanalíticas, partindo tanto de dentro da psicologia do ego quanto de seus críticos. Este trabalho se propõe examinar as concepções bem diferentes de dois psicanalistas americanos que tiveram um impacto profundo na cena psicanalítica dos últimos 25 anos: Hans Loewald e Charles Brenner. Enquanto o primeiro foi um crítico contundente da psicologia do ego, o segundo promoveu significativos desenvolvimentos desta mesma teoria
