The excesses of the contemporary and the constitution of subjectivity

The development of the human psyche occurs through contact with reality and the ability to receive and select stimuli. Currently, permanent contact, in real time, with facts from all latitudes requires an intense effort to understand the world. However, an excess of reality can make it difficult to preserve the necessary space for fantasies and illusion, leading to changes in the economy of attention and hyperactivity. As a result of this phenomenon, we see the restriction of space for contemplation and the increase in productive desire or, as Han (2017) defines it, the performance society. Faced with this finding, this article proposes that we think about contemporary subjectivity marked by the influence of an intense conflict between a cultural Ego Ideal, with high production and performance demands, and an Ego overloaded by these demands. As a result, we would have a kind of collective melancholy and the resulting picture of manic defenses.
